Mule Deer Hunts

The 2009 mule deer season was once again highly successful for Non- Typical Outfitters. We started the season with more pre-scouted big deer than years past. There was an increase in antler growth this year compared to last year. We took some great bucks in the early part of the season in spite of the extremely hot temperatures. Toward the end of the season the weather began to cooperate with some snow in the high country. That produced some tremendous opportunities. We killed some great bucks in the snow, and missed some even better ones. There were also some great deer that were passed up. They will be even bigger for next year!

We are having a mild start to our 2009 winter. With the tremendous rainfall that our winter grounds received this past spring and summer, 2010 could be one the the best years yet! Check out our scouting gallery for a sample of the bucks that we located this past summer.

Western Wyoming is home to one of the top mule deer herds in the country.  We have a high buck to doe ratio, outstanding genetics and the age class necessary for trophy quality deer.  This herd has produced many well known bucks such as Popeye, Morty and Goliath.  Their genetics can still be seen in the herd today.  The draw system has kept the hunting pressure low and allowed the bucks in this area to achieve their genetic potential.  The quality of the winter range is also a great benefit to our deer herds, giving them the feed necessary to survive our harsh winters.  All of these factors work together to make this one of the best areas to hunt for trophy quality mule deer in the United States.

Rifle mule deer hunts start September 15 and run through mid October.  Our method of hunting is almost exclusively spot and stalk.  We will spend most of our day glassing and locating bucks in the spotting scope.  Our time and efforts are focused on areas where we know monster mulies live.  We will have spent a minimum of 20-30 days scouting preseason before you arrive for your hunt.

Our hunts take place in the high country of western Wyoming from 7,000 to 10,000 feet.  Horses give us transport to the high country.  From that point we do most of our hunting on foot.  Hiking is a must.  The terrain in which we hunt mule deer is physically challenging to all degrees of hunters.  We feel it offers a good opportunity to each and every one of our clients to bag that trophy mule deer of a lifetime.  Much of our success depends on our hunters.  The more prepared you are for your hunt, the better your chances of success.

Cornado

This is a buck that we found during our preseason scouting that we named "Cornado" (the crown buck). Unfortunately one of our hunters was not able to take this buck home. We did shoot at Cornado twice in his bed at about 200 yards, but missed. He then ran over the next ridge and was killed by a DIY hunter. One of our guides is pictured with Cornado. We feel fortunate to have hunted such a great buck. I hope the hunter that took Cornado home appreciates how lucky he is...
